"What is in a Name?" - July 1, 2007

Someone was asking, "What do you think it means to believe in THE NAME OF CHRIST?"

The name of Christ is not: J-E-S-U-S C-H-R-I-S-T. Some people complain that Jesus' name is really pronounced, "Yeshua," (or something close to that) and also that by badly mangling the pronunciation of his name, that we are gravely insulting the Lord.

In truth, the name of a man is not merely the sounds that the mouth utters in order to label that person. There is power in calling on the name of Jesus Christ, but it has nothing to do with the sounds of the words. What it really has to do with, is who we believe he is; so what we believe about Jesus Christ really determines what his "name" is to us, and whether we are in the faith.

Who exactly are we believing on? The Apostles added personal identifyers to "belief." A favorite verse is: Romans 10:9 "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." It isn't just, "any Jesus," which we are to believe on, it is specifically, that Jesus Christ whom, "God raised up."

Faith does not stop there, and this is why doctrine is so very  important. False doctrine will yield a false impression of who Jesus really is. So believing in Jesus Christ does not stop with, "I Do," it continues, from faith to faith.

If we believe in the real Jesus, our knowledge of who he really is going to grow, in truth, and it will not stop with "I believe in my heart that he rose from the dead," because, if our knowledge of the true Christ stops there, then our faith is dead.

If we add false doctrine to "I believe he rose from the dead" such as "and he taught reincarnation"  then our faith is in vain, for our Christ is not the same one as declared in God's word. "A little leaven leavens the whole lump."

That is why God really has to step in and save us, show us the right way, and reveal himself to us, because how can a man, by his own power, come to really "know" a God such as our God? Impossible.

Rev19:12 ...and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself...13 ...and his name is called The Word of God.
